Article from - Canadian Firefighter and EMS Quarterly - October 2004 issue SCBA care and maintenance - New Products - SCBA Safe-T-System

Introducing the
Safe"T"System (System Apparatus For Efficient Transport) from E.S. Safety Systems Inc. The Complete air handling system, portable cylinder holder/carrier and securing system all in-one, patent pending. "Air management, air handling, air quality, there is no more critical issue in the fire service," said developer Rick Denike, a Whitby, Ontario, firefighter. "Having extensive experience in the transportation of dangerous goods with regards to safe handling and storage of pressure vessels, as a relatively new firefighter I was more than a little uncomfortable with the way we in the fire service transported our SCBA cylinders. Our primary focus initially was the safety issue of air handling but as our product developed we realized other valuable features such as fire ground efficiency and huge fire department cost savings." The concept is simple yet extremely effective. The "T" handle locks the cylinders into the holder and also locks the holder into the truck compartment. A quarter turn in either direction allows an individual cylinder to be removed or the complete two cylinder holder to be removed from the compartment for transporting to a staging area or a refill site. This eliminates the unsafe practice of handling cylinders by the valve handles or valve gauge preventing the very real possibility of dropping a high pressure vessel in an unfriendly environment. With higher working pressures up to 4,500 psi and lighter composite cylinders these air cylinders, if not handled properly, are a potential rocket.

The
Safe"T"System can improve efficiency on the fireground, allowing firefighters to get more cylinders and equipment to the scene faster and easier, with less effort and less personnel. It can reduce department costs by limiting potential workplace injury costs, labour costs (more productive use of personnel). It can prolong life span of expensive cylinders, eliminates early replacement costs and helps eliminate bent valve handles, broken valve gauges, damaged valve threads, cylinder shell repairs from scrapes and bangs, etc.
The
Safe"T"System makes it possible to realistically fulfil the objectives of our operational guidelines more safely, more efficiently and with reduced costs. We feel this product will revolutionize the way spare SCBA cylinders are handled in the fire service, noted Denike.
E.S. Safety Systems' mission is to greatly impact fire services safety issues with this innovative product and others to follow in the new year.

FireFit Challenge Canada

E.S.Safety Systems Inc. had the opportunity in September of 2006 to provide Dale & Hilary McRoberts of FireFit of Canada Ltd. with samples of our Safe"T"System Holder/Carriers for storage and handling of SCBA cylinders at the 2006 Canadian FireFit Challenge Championships in Niagara Falls.
From the success of our test at that event our Safe"T"System has been traveling with FireFit of Canada Ltd. more than 20,000 kilometers per year from early May in British Columbia through September in Eastern Canada and back again, safely securing Dale's Scott Air Cylinders. That's the equivalent in kilometers of several years on most departments pump/rescue or heavy rescue or air/light apparatus of secure SCBA Cylinder storage. Plus every weekend at the Challenge events, FireFit fills upward to and occasionally more than 100 SCBA Cylinders during the course of a day, simulating a large scale fire incident by manually transporting empty cylinders from the finish line to the refill site and back to the starting point at the tower. Thus thoroughly testing the manual handling capabilities of the Safe"T"System Holder/Carriers.
Dale is a retired Vancouver Firefighter that now dedicates his time to running about 20 of these FireFit Challenge Events per year plus the Championships from Coast to Coast across this country allowing Firefighters to hone their skills, improve their physical fitness and challenge themselves during the toughest two minutes in sports.

Quote from Dale McRoberts:

"E.S.Safety Systems Inc. has supplied FireFit with a safe and secure way of transporting our Scott Air Cylinders across Canada. After years of stacking them one on top of the next and rolling them on the ground we have finally found the right system! With all of the new equipment and technology we owe it to ourselves to protect our investments properly, thanks Safe"T"System!"

Niagara Falls Fire Services

Our reasons for selecting your system:
"Niagara Falls is using Safe"T"System because it provides a secure means for manual and vehicular transportation and storage of SCBA cylinders. It also provides physical protection of cylinders which increases responder safety and cylinder life."

Lee Smith EFO, CET, CMMIII, Fire Chief, Niagara Falls Fire Services

Barrie Fire and Emergency Services

"Barrie installed a Safe"T"System 4 Holder/Carrier system on one of our pumpers with very positive feedback from our firefighters on its professional appearance and the fact that you can double the number of cylinders carried into a highrise incident or to your rehab area by using these Holder/Carriers. We have since purchased a 12 Holder/carriers station rack and a utility truck rack for our pick-up truck. The Safe"T"System is a great product for storing and transporting spare SCBA cylinders".

Rick Monkman, Deputy Chief, Barrie Fire and Emergency Services.

Bob Mowat, Assistant Chief, Whitby Fire and Emergency Services

"Air cylinders need to be handled properly. The fire scene is a fast paced working environment. The more efficient and safe the scene can be the more effective the end result can be. With strict guidelines, Health and Safety issues, government agencies, and workplace protocols, the need to eliminate potential hazards and accidents is up to everyone. The Safe"T"System Holder/Carriers make the transportation of SCBA cylinders safe!"

Jeff Bentley, Acting Platoon Chief, Whitby Fire and Emergency Services
